The analysis aims to contribute to the academic and industry knowledge on HMI (Human Machine Interface) and its role on maritime accidents. It aims to study aspects of HMI in accidents to identify priority safety concerns.

Ethnographic studies

The general idea is to collect information on weaknesses in the human-centred design of ships. An analysis was carried out to get a better insight of the current working conditions and the improvement potential.

The analysis of the current practices and the innovation potential in the human centred design domain. Investigation whether HCD is already used by ship yards and ship operators and to what extent.

In the CyClaDes project a framework has been developed to organise existing knowledge and experience to support a more user-centred perspective in the design and approval of ships and ship systems

Best practices in the maritime industry

User-centered design is already a concern, particularly in some research and development fields of the maritime industry, e.g. with respect to human-machine interaction. In order to utilise this knowledge and make it more accessible to designers, operators and authorities, best practices, methods and knowledge about common errors across the design and operation life cycle have been compiled.

Best practices in other industries

User-centered design and evaluation procedures from other domains have been identified and compiled. Domains of overlapping human element interest include transportation domains (aviation, space, automotive, rail), industrial domains (power plants, manufacturing)and medical domains. The focus was on best practices, methodologies, lessons learned, and common errors in reference to design, training, operations, maintenance, and evaluation.

Risk assessment and crew performance prediction

In the context of the quantitative risk analysis, a methodology for the incorporation of the human factor and the assessment of its contributing factors has been developed.

Resilience concepts, assessment and modelling

Safety is more than the absence of accidents. Recent research on ‘Safety 2.0’ and Resilience Engineering has attempted to identify the positive characteristics of safety, and the role of the operator in ‘making safety’. This task of CyClaDes examined the topic to identify practical ways of assessing and applying resilience.

Handling of usability requirements from a regulatory perspective

How can usability be evaluated by regulators and how can usability requirements be provided to equipment and system designers? These are the main problems addressed in this task of the project. The work in this task is still ongoing, results will be presented soon.


The construct of fatigue is still very much present in the maritime domain and has been seldom investigated in relation to mental workload. Our research focusing the attention on the operator functional state in relation to eye-movements and how ocular data may assess the operator mental workload in the maritime domain, has been carried out in a series of validation studies.

Application of innovative ergonomic concepts and demonstrators
Usability of HCD guidelines for maritime workspaces

A lot of human factors and ergonomics recommendations exist and ought to be applied in ship design process. However, there is often a distance between the designers, the regulators and the operators perspectives. The main questions of this report are to evaluate if current guides and recommendations, if followed, would really fulfil operator’s needs and discuss how existing guides and recommendation are applied in a ship-design process.

Design exercises

The objective of this part of the project is to assess the “real-world” applicability of available guidance, methods and regulations. The design exercises cover different equipment. All design exercises are still ongoing. First results will be presented soon.

Qualification concepts

The objective of this work package is to define qualification concepts that raise the awareness for user centered design with regard to ships. An E-learning platform providing training courses for designers, operators, end-users and authorities is under development will be launched soon.
